I have news! You might have noticed last week that the Darkworld books temporarily disappeared from Amazon. This is because I got the rights to the series back from my publishers and republished them myself. The ebook versions are already back on Amazon. The paperbacks are a little trickier because I need to have the covers updated, but they should be up again shortly. :)
And now, the news... the audio rights to Darkness Watching have sold to Tantor Media, and you can already pre-order the audiobook on Amazon! It'll be out on August 23rd.
Faerie Blood & Faerie Magic audiobooks - rights sold to Audible, Inc. (Waiting for an update!) Darkness Watching audiobook - rights sold to Tantor Media. Out August 23rd! Changeling Chronicles Book 4 - in edits, on track to publish in September. Alliance Book 5 - in edits, on track to publish in October. Darkworld Book 5 - on track to publish in October.
It's been a while since I posted an author interview, but today I'm interviewing Rebecca Chastain, author of the Gargoyle Guardian Chronicles!
1. What are the unique rules of magic in your Gargoyle Guardian Chronicles series? In other words, tell us a little about your world.
The Gargoyle Guardian Chronicles take place in a world a lot like 1900s United States, but saturated with magic. Mythical creatures coexist with people, and every person has the ability to work elemental magic. However, strengths with the five elements (earth, air, water, wood, and fire) vary from person to person.
Mika Stillwater is a midlevel earth elemental, and her specialty is with one of the most common forms of rock: quartz. Determined to differentiate herself from her peers, she’s worked hard to hone her ability to manipulate quartz into delicate pieces of art in the hopes of starting her own business and leaving behind her mind-numbing quarry job. Her goal is within sight when her whole world is turned upside down by a desperate baby gargoyle and the dangerous mission they undertake.
2. When you sat down to build the world of Magic of the Gargoyles (Gargoyle Guardian Chronicles book 1), how did you start?
Oddly enough, with feng shui. I’ve had a lot of success using feng shui in my home, but while I can see how colors and chi flow enhances and affects each room, I’ve never quite understood how to use the elements to my benefit. During the course of updating my apartment’s feng shui one year, I had a moment of wishing the elements were magic instead of physical, and the idea was born.
From there, I spent a lot of time pondering and brainstorming what the United States would look like if elemental magic had always existed. I don’t think we would be such a technological culture, or that we would have turned to fossil fuels and motor engines if we could power vehicles with air magic or take a flight on the back of a gryphon.
And if fantastical creatures like gargoyles existed… Well, I had my idea and I was off and running with it.
3. If Mika Stillwater wasn’t busy starring in your series and had time to kill, what books or TV shows would she pick?
Interacting with gargoyles is a new experience for her, so she’d be at the library hunting down all the information she could find on them. For pleasure reading, I think Mika would love Robin D. Owens’s Celta series for relatable fiction and Anne McCaffrey’s Pern series for escapist fun (as if people could travel in space and genetically manipulate fire lizards into dragons!).
4. What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned while doing research for a novel?
There are so many forms of quartz! Before writing this series, I thought there were only smoky, clear, and rose quartz, but agate, carnelian, tigereye, amethyst, citrine, jasper, chalcedony, and dumortierite are all forms of quartz, too. Since all the gargoyles in my world are made of living quartz, that gave me a lot of flexibility to create beautiful characters. 5. What are you currently working on?
With the final installment in the Gargoyle Guardian Chronicles trilogy just released, I’ve turned my attention to Lured, a novelette in the same universe. It takes place after the trilogy, featuring all the fan-favorite characters. The novelette is a bribe for reviews: I’ve promised readers that once Curse of the Gargoyles (book 2) reaches 75 reviews on Amazon and Secret of the Gargoyles (book 3) reaches 50 reviews, I’ll release the novelette for free. I’ve been pleasantly shocked by the influx of reviews, and I need to get cracking on finishing the edits so I can have the story ready in time!
Synopsis of Magic of the Gargoyles: To help a baby gargoyle, Mika will risk everything. Mika Stillwater is a midlevel earth elemental with ambitions of becoming a quartz artisan, and her hard work is starting to get noticed. But when a panicked baby gargoyle bursts into her studio, insisting Mika is the only person she’ll trust with her desperate mission, Mika’s carefully constructed five-year plan is shattered. Swept into the gritty criminal underworld of Terra Haven, Mika jeopardizes everything she’s work so hard for as she attempts to save the baby gargoyle from the machinations of a monster—and to stay alive… From the imaginative mind of international bestselling fantasy author Rebecca Chastain, Magic of the Gargoyles is a spellbinding adventure set in a world full of elemental magic and adorable gargoyles that is sure to enchant young adult and adult readers alike. I feared that using my magic would bring me closer to the faerie realm I tried so desperately to escape. I was right.
I made a promise to a faerie, and they’ve come to deliver. A powerful talisman has disappeared, and without it, the faeries in this realm are losing their magic. Getting involved wasn't on my plan, but if I refuse to help the faeries find the talisman, I’ll die.
To make things more complicated, shifters are being killed by a mysterious masked faerie, and all signs point to a connection with the missing talisman. To find the killer and help the half-faeries, I must unlock the full extent of the magic I once feared, even if it means leaving the Mage Lord determined to stand at my side. Even if it takes me to Faerie’s most dangerous path…
I have some awesome news: my agent has sold the audio rights to the first two Changeling Chronicles books to Audible, Inc. :D
Faerie Blood and Faerie Magic are coming to audio, within the next year! (I'm hoping before the end of the year, but I'll be able to give more of an update once they're in progress!)
Thank you... I sound like a broken record, but I know it was because of Faerie Blood's sales ranking and reviews that it caught the attention of both an agent and audiobook publishers (we actually had more than one offer). I'm beyond grateful to everyone who's supported me!
Two years ago, the fiends invaded Earth. Two months ago, I joined the Pyros, a group of warriors with astonishing powers, to fight the monsters that destroyed our world. Today, the second invasion began. The Pyros have scattered. The fiends are on the brink of invading, led by the terrifying, bloodthirsty Fiordan warlords. My friends and I must take the ultimate risk to find the truth about the Fiordans, and how to unlock my potential as Transcendent. Because the enemy has a reason to fear me.
This week only, you can start the Indestructible trilogy for only $0.99!
Two years ago, the fiends invaded, with a devastating explosion that split the world in two. Even now, energy blasts strike without warning, destroying everything in their paths. The fiends hunt anyone unlucky enough to escape.
My name is Leah. An energy blast killed my group. It should have killed me, too. Instead, I woke up alone in the wilderness, stalked by the fiends. Until a latent fighting power awakens in my blood, and I discover I'm more than human.
Swept into the world of the Pyros -- flame-conjuring warriors born to kill the fiends -- I learn to unlock the fire buried inside me. But I swiftly learn my allies aren't what they seem. The literal skeletons buried underneath their base are my first clue. The darkness stirring in my blood, showing me memories that don't belong to me, is another. And the man whose memories I see hides dangerous secrets behind his eyes.
If I don't uncover the truth about why the world ended the first time, my new safe haven might go up in smoke...
Two years ago, the fiends invaded Earth. Two months ago, I joined the Pyros, a group of warriors with astonishing powers, to fight the monsters that destroyed our world.
But then I found out they were keeping secrets from me. Jared, the sadistic scientist who betrayed them, has captured my ally, who’s linked to me through a blood-connection that’s slowly killing us both. To get him back, I have to leave my new friends and face the wilderness alone. But Jared’s not the only threat out there. The fiends are moving, forces stir on the other side of the divide, and if Jared’s plan succeeds, it’ll spell disaster for our world.
Yep, you read the title right. I have an agent! I’m now represented by Sarah Hershman of Hershman Rights Management.
Here’s my story of how I got an agent… without sending any query letters in two years. In summer 2014, I started writing a series that absolutely consumed me, and after four years of near-misses in the query trenches, I knew I had a knack for writing weird cross-genre stuff and/or completely missing trends. Traditional publishing wasn’t the right path for that project, so I threw myself into self-publishing (which I’d been considering as an option since I wrote Darkness Watching after the YA paranormal boom had passed). I launched Adamant in March 2015, finished the series, and dedicated all my free time to indie publishing (while freelance editing as my other full time job). Since then, I’ve published the first four books in the Alliance series, revisited an old project and turned it into a trilogy (the Indestructible trilogy), and started a brand new adult urban fantasy series (the Changeling Chronicles).
Basically, I’ve been far too busy to even consider trying the traditional route again, or going hybrid. At least, until I got an email the other week from an agent interested in my books. (Specifically, the Changeling Chronicles series.) After talking to other clients and reading over the contract, I decided to accept. I’ll still be self-publishing all my books for the foreseeable future, but my agent will be handling foreign rights and submitting my books to audiobook publishers (crossing my fingers that we’ll get to hear Faerie Blood in audio by the end of the year!).
Faerie Blood is the 29th book I’ve written (half the others are shelved), and the ninth book I’ve published. Those stats are meant to be encouraging, not depressing, because it really does only take one book – and when good things happen, they happen fast. To say the last two months have been life-changing isn’t an exaggeration, and I can honestly say that if not for strong reader support, Faerie Blood and the Changeling Chronicles wouldn’t have been discovered.
So here’s the thing… there’s more than one path to success. I wasn’t happy in the query trenches, and it took a lot of soul-searching to admit traditional publishing just wasn’t what I wanted. My primary goal has always been to write full time, and indie publishing offered me a clear path to making that happen in the time frame I wanted it to. Signing with an agent after I was committed to my path and armed with knowledge from the other side of the publishing fence meant I had a better idea of what to expect. I wanted an agent who could help me with the parts I can’t do myself – like selling subsidiary rights. HRM offered the perfect option for me, and I’m excited to see what the future brings.
Thank you to everyone who’s stuck with me through this crazy ride, and helped by buying/supporting Faerie Blood!
