I'm Emma, the New York Times & USA Today Bestselling author of the Changeling Chronicles and other fantasy novels, avid reader, book hoarder, world wanderer and restless dreamer.
I've written all my life, ever since I was the shy, awkward bookworm hiding in a corner of the classroom at school. There's never been a moment in my life where I haven't been telling or reading stories. When I was ten, my teacher suggested I could be a writer when I grew up... and that was it. I knew what I wanted to do with my life.
I spent the next nine years writing and rewriting my first novel, then embarking on the difficult path to finding an agent or publisher. At the end of that journey, I had to accept that the first book I wrote wasn't going to be the one I published. So I wrote another one. And another. My first book was published by a small press in 2013, after which I decided to stop pursuing traditional publishing. After extensive research into self-publishing, I decided I was happier being my own publisher.
I grew up reading Diana Wynne Jones, J.K. Rowling and Philip Pullman, so it was probably inevitable that I ended up writing weird and fantastical stories. I love reading all kinds of fantasy, from urban to epic. Bonus points for dragons.
At the moment, I live in the middle of England. I've also lived in Lancaster, where I got my BA in English Literature with Creative Writing, and wrote my dissertation on Harry Potter, Tolkien and storytelling.
When I'm not reading, I like to play video games and watch anime and movies. I also love to travel. I've scuba dived in the Great Barrier Reef, skydived over mountains, watched the Northern Lights in Iceland, volunteered in the Costa Rican jungle, camped in the African bush, and been swimming with dolphins in New Zealand.
What’s the best way to find out when your next book comes out?
I always share book news with my newsletter subscribers first -- you can sign up here to be the first to see new covers, blurbs, and updates (and also get some free short stories).
I loved Adamant/Indestructible/Faerie Blood. What can I do to help you spread the word?
Firstly, thank you! ^_^ As an author, there’s nothing better than hearing from readers and fans. As I’m indie published, word of mouth is crucial in getting my books in front of more readers. Posting a short review on retailer sites like Amazon is the best way to spread the word, because the retailers recommend books they think customers will enjoy. More reviews means a higher chance of my books being discovered! I have an advance review team, if you're interested in getting early copies of my books in exchange for an honest review.
If you’ve read and enjoyed any of my books and want to help me spread the word in exchange for exclusive behind-the-scenes access to developments on my books, then my street team is always open to new members!
