I'm Emma, the New York Times & USA Today Bestselling author of the Changeling Chronicles and other fantasy novels, avid reader, book hoarder, world wanderer and restless dreamer.
I've written all my life, ever since I was the shy, awkward bookworm hiding in a corner of the classroom at school. There's never been a moment in my life where I haven't been telling or reading stories. When I was ten, my teacher suggested I could be a writer when I grew up... and that was it. I knew what I wanted to do with my life.
I spent the next nine years writing and rewriting my first novel, then embarking on the difficult path to finding an agent or publisher. At the end of that journey, I had to accept that the first manuscript I wrote wasn't going to be the one I published. So I wrote another one. And another. My first book was published by a small press in 2013, after which I decided to stop pursuing traditional publishing. After extensive research into self-publishing, I decided I was happier being my own publisher.
I grew up reading Diana Wynne Jones, J.K. Rowling and Philip Pullman, so it was probably inevitable that I ended up writing weird and fantastical stories. I love reading all kinds of fantasy, from urban to epic. Bonus points for dragons.
At the moment, I live in the middle of England. I've also lived in Lancaster, where I got my BA in English Literature with Creative Writing, and wrote my dissertation on Harry Potter, Tolkien and storytelling.
When I'm not reading, I like to play video games and watch anime and movies. As well as exploring Skyrim, I also love to travel the world and do wildly exciting things like skydiving over the mountains of New Zealand, scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef, watching the Northern Lights in Iceland, and camping safaris in Africa.
